There are many different types of depression and not all are alike. Depression can vary from short term feelings of loss or disappointment which we experience in everyday life to more severe forms that require treatment. Forms include reactive depression, unipolar depression, bipolar depression as well as seasonal affective disorder (SAD). There are many other forms also, like post-natal depression with varying symptoms and treatments and as there are different forms there are also different methods to depression treatment.

Contrary to some peoples belief that sufferers of depression “ need to snap out of it” and get on with their lives, this is not possible as treatment is required. Depression can have a huge impact on everyday life for its sufferers as it disrupts eating, concentration, sleep and work.

In some cases a bout of severe depression may only occur once in a persons lifetime but more often than not it usually reoccurs throughout their lifetime.

Getting Help with Depression

If you feel that you or somebody close to you is suffering with depression you should talk to someone about it. Depression is not something that should be hidden away or that you should feel ashamed of, it is a real medical condition like any other and it is treatable, talking to someone will help and may make you feel more confident to confide in your doctor or perhaps seek councelling.

Too many people are afraid to confront someone when they suspect that person is suffering or is depressed, when in fact it can be very beneficial to both people. There are many support groups available to help depression sufferers and having someplace to go that you can meet other people who are in the same situation or have been through depression is a good way to open up and confront this type of illness.
